It’s a Kindle Christmas… Maybe a KindleNation?

Amazon.com just announced record breaking sales of the Kindle for this holiday season.  On a personal note, my family had a total of three Kindles under various trees, and we’re now a two-Kindle household.  Here’s more from Amazon (full release here):

Amazon Kindle is the Most Gifted Item Ever on Amazon.com

On Christmas Day, for the First Time Ever, Customers Purchased More Kindle Books Than Physical Books

SEATTLE, Dec 26, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced that Kindle has become the most gifted item in Amazon’s history. On Christmas Day, for the first time ever, customers purchased more Kindle books than physical books. The Kindle Store now includes over 390,000 books and the largest selection of the most popular books people want to read, including New York Times Bestsellers and New Releases.

“We are grateful to our customers for making Kindle the most gifted item ever in our history,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “On behalf of Amazon.com employees around the world, we wish everyone happy holidays and happy reading!”

On Amazon’s peak day, Dec. 14, 2009, customers ordered over 9.5 million items worldwide, which is a record-breaking 110 items per second.

If Carolyn Reidy had any doubt that she wasn’t making the right decision by withholding the release of books in ebook format, this should confirm her business instincts.  These people that want to read books in a format they prefer must be stopped!

I’m sure Simon & Schuster’s authors will be glad  not to sell their books to the most passionate readers in the world.  And if not?  Well, come on, what can they really do about it?

Disclosures: I own a Kindle and bought one for my wife for
Christmas 2009.  Also, I'm long Amazon stock (AMZN).
